Sonata for Violin Duo ("Morning Songs") is inspired by a collection of recent experiences and associated images. These include visiting Palo Duro Canyon twice near Amarillo, TX while on a trip to see an old college roommate; my frequent visits to Chiwaukee Prairie outside my hometown of Kenosha, WI; and anytime I am looking at Lake Michigan or visiting the Chicago Botanic Gardens. (Even more specifically, a Ravinia recital by pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard of Olivier Messiaen's two-and-one-half-hour “Catalogue d'oiseaux” was also source for inspiration.) Out of these recent experiences come the ideas and moods that are put forward in the sonata. The composer is grateful for the artistry of Ilana and Margot and for inviting him to compose this work.
