Each movement is based upon a popular folksong from Emilia Romagna region, Italy. Gli scariolanti was sung by the swamp reclamation workers near Ferrara, end of 19th century: “scariolanti” were the day labourers carrying wheelbarrows. Ninna nanna di Monghidoro is a traditional lullaby and lament from Monghidoro (Bologna), as recalled by the late Maria and Novilia Grillini. La fiera di San Lazzaro is a traditional risqué song about the ancient fair of San Lazzaro di Savena (Bologna).
