This is one of a number of pieces where the notes came from a musical code. I took the 23rd Psalm and applied my code to its words and used those notes as a kind of row. Thus, the mood of the piece has nothing to do with Psalm 23. I like to embed secrets into my music. This specific technique is not very musical, but like using an odd melody in a set of variations, you can make something interesting out of any musical materiel. I used to do this with drawing pictures. I would scribble then try to see what picture I could make out of it. The point of this piece is that it is the words of the 23rd Psalm that form the structure of the piece.
The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me. Thou dost prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; Thou hast anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
