Extra Information Pub. Kistner, 1898. The dedicatee (1844–1900) was Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha from 1893 to 1900. He was the second son and fourth child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was known as the Duke of Edinburgh from 1866 until he succeeded his uncle Ernest II (1818–1893, Prince Albert's brother) as Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in the German Empire. He married the daughter of Czar Alexander II of Russia (r.1855-81), and had four daughters who married into various European royal families. Alfred enjoyed music and helped found the Royal College of Music in 1882. He was a keen but not particularly good violinist.
