Authorship doubtful : in his Preface to his edition, K.G. Fellerer draws our attention to the fact these Ricercari belong to the works of Palestrina without known original print or autograph. They were included in Vol.32 (pp.80 sq.) of Palestrina's Complete Works with an Introduction by F.X.Haberl (available on IMSLP), who took them from a copy made by Girolamo Chiti (1679-1759), found in the legacy of Giuseppe Baini (1775-1844). They are composed in strict motet form and follow the 8 modes.
Performance is possible with keyboard, string or wind-instruments, with viols or beak flutes being preferable, as being closest to the original sound. Tempo corresponds to an Andante. In order to bring out the separate voices, it is advisable to combine string and wind instruments. In the XVI century it was customary to add coloraturas especially if the part was executed by several instruments and one instrument held on the written melody (res facta).
