Gabrielli used the Italian cello tuning of the 17th century, CGdg. However this is not notated the usual way for scordatura music, but at sounding pitch. There are a few chords that can only be played in this tuning.

- *"In her preface [of the Hortus Musicus edition], Bettina Hoffmann notes that three different people may have been involved in the copying of the manuscript (which contains all seven ricercare, the canon for two cellos, and a sonata for cello and continuo). She states that none of the hand writing looks to be Gabrielli's based on her work with some of his other manuscripts which are known to be in his hand." Brian Carter.
