Navigation etc.
At the end of the manuscript score Georg Gerson describes the circumstances around the piece. It was composed for an Italian tenor singer, Giovanni Piantanida (Gaetano Piantanida 1768-1836) visiting Copenhagen 1813 for a concert at The Odd Fellow Palace. On the planned program was an aria, Sento mancarmi l'anima which Gerson ascribed to Giovanni Simone Mayr. This aria was most likely written by Girolamo Crescentini (1762-1846) as an addition to Mayr's opera Alonso e Cora. Gerson used a motive from the aria in the music to follow, the present recitativo and aria with text by Stefano Vestris taken from a cantata, Diana e Endimione by Ferdinando Paër. In the end the concert was dropped and the planned composition was not completed. Instead Gerson wrote a sketch to a short coda to be used for a stand alone performance of the recitativo and aria.
