Quoting the famous words of Polonius in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, “Brevity is the Soul of Wit”.
This was my motto while composing this small string quartet. Accordingly, with the possible exception of the third movement, I kept aiming at as concise expression as possible. So the work takes only about one quarter of an hour in performance. In musical terms, its motto is the rising third, e’’ - g’’ in its most typical form. This starts the work and returns every now and then, bringing with it, I hope, an element of unity into the work.
I dedicate the Quartettino to the memory of my late cousin Juha Nuoritalo (1954-2018). During innumerable summer evenings I had, after he returned from his agricultural duties, the opportunity of listening to late Beethoven in his company and admiring his profound insight as regards interpretations by many famous string quartets.
