History

The New York firm Pond published songs and piano music for domestic use from 1832 to 1917.

Sylvanus Billings Pond (April 5, 1792–March 12, 1871) joined John Firth and William Hall in founding the piano manufacturer and music publisher firm Firth, Hall & Pond in 1832. When Hall withdrew in 1848 the firm became Firth, Pond & Co. Upon S.B. Pond's retirement from the firm in 1850 he was succeeded by his son William A. Pond (Oct. 13, 1824–Aug. 12, 1885).

In 1863 Firth and Pond split with Firth creating Firth, Son & Co. and Pond establishing William A. Pond & Co. at the same location (547 Broadway) that the predecessor firms had occupied since 1857. Pond's eldest son William A. Pond, Jr. joined the firm but died in 1884. After William, Sr. died in 1885 his other sons Albert Edward and George Warren Pond took control of the company. William A. Pond & Co. appears to have ceased operations in 1917.

The firm's catalog was purchased by Joseph Fletcher in 1934 and eventually was acquired by Carl Fischer in 1946.
