Definitely first published as a sonatina? Worth asking, as many works by e.g. Kuhlau that one now knows as "sonatinas" were first composed and published as sonatas (and should be so represented here, however we know them now. :) )
Answer: The autograph score bears the heading "Sonatina." None of J. H. Berlin's music was published during his lifetime. The sonatina survives in a manuscript (ms 142, eske 18) at the University Library of Oslo. This manuscript is described in the literature as being in the handwriting of the composer. The sonatina was published for the first time in 1959 when it appeared in a volume of a Norwegian series entitled "Pro piano : fire seklers undervisningsmusikk" (vol. 3; Drammen: Lyche, [1959]).
- Thanks! RISM-online only lists a few works of his, but then it only covers part of RISM which I do not have easy access to (I think.) (I expect some of the answers to my questions are probably in the larger RISM catalogue/database though. :) )
