In the composer's sketchbook, it seems the first movement of the sonata was intended to be a B-flat minor symphony. Though, the project was abandoned due to time constraints. Valentine ended up using the first movement of that project to the sonata, even from that the sonata was intended to be two movements. The drafted sonata had the third movement as the first, and the second stayed the same.
