"Nielsen probably conceived the idea for Pan og Syrinx in autumn 1917. During December 1917 and January 1918, he was busy conducting concerts and therefore did not have time to work more specifically on the idea. The composition was to be performed at a symphonic concert on 11 February, and the sources reveal that Nielsen was in a hurry to get the new work ready on time."
