Loosely based on Berlioz’s impressions of the novel by Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832) and bearing a quotation “Dreams of love and Lady’s charms/Give place to honour and to arms”, the work was dedicated to the composer’s maternal uncle, who may have played a part in his earliest publications dating from the late 1810s/early 1820s.
