Navigation etc.

A collection of motets in honor of:

  • Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor (died 1564)
  • Maximillian II, Holy Roman Emperor
  • Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria
  • Charles II, Archduke of Austria
  • Prince Rudolf (future Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II)
  • Archduke Ernest of Austria
  • Alfonso II d'Este, Duke of Ferrara
  • Albert V, Duke of Bavaria
  • Johann III. von Trautson (member of an Austrian noble family)
  • Jacobus Vaet (died 1567, ironically one year before the Novi Thesauri was published)
  • Pietro Giovanelli (member of a Bergamasque noble family)

In many references, "Pietro Giovanelli" is credited as the main contributor, but he was not a composer. He was the patron of the collection, which, according to Erin Lambert, "was unprecedented in size; it included more than 250 motets [. . . it] provides insight into activities of the Habsburg court chapels in Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck, and Prague." (Singing the Resurrection: Body, Community, and Belief in Reformation Europe, pp.168-169)
