- Outline of the action completed with Massine on 21 September 1937, Positano; music composed between January and 4 February 1938, Berlin; piano reduction completed 14 February 1938 en route to the United States.
- -Paul Hindemith: A Research and Information Guide
- Ballet premiered under the title "St. Francis." Hindemith made an orchestral suite from five of the ballet's numbers (above) in August 1938 (Nobilissima Visione, Konzert-Suite), and added a small passage to the ballet score at Massine's request on 26 August. The "Meditation" (No.8) movement was published separately in arrangements for violin and piano (ED 3683), viola and piano (ED 3684), and cello and piano (ED 3685). Extra woodwind and brass parts added in March 1939; original complement is (see "Instrumentation for woodwinds and brass" above).
