Ballet premiered under the title "St. Francis." Hindemith made an orchestral suite from five of the ballet's numbers (above) in August 1938 (Nobilissima Visione, Konzert-Suite), and added a small passage to the ballet score at Massine's request on 26 August. The "Meditation" (No.8) movement was published separately in arrangements for violin and piano (ED 3683), viola and piano (ED 3684), and cello and piano (ED 3685). Extra woodwind and brass parts added in March 1939; original complement is (see "Instrumentation for woodwinds and brass" above).
