Extra Information | The title should be translated as "New German songs in the manner of Italian madrigals and canzonettas". The adjective "welsch" can mean "foreign" in general but during the 16th century came to refer specifically to romance-language foreigners, particularly Italians (see the entry in the Grimms' Deutsches Wörterbuch for "wälsch"). This can be put in context with the fact that Hassler was one of the first German composers who went to study in Italy. |
