Johann Moritz Konrad Schauenburg (1827-1895) founded this publisher in Lahr, a town in the Black Forest region, in 1856.
It was a general publisher.
One of its famous items was the Volkskalender Lahrer Hinkender Bote, (literally the limping messenger from Lahr's calendar), a calendar with stories and local information.
Allgemeine Deutsche Kommersbuch (1858-) also known as Lahrer Kommersbuch was a student songbook which went through 150 editions. It is related to the German tradition of Student Corps or Burschenschaft, similar to college fraternities in the USA. The book was specially made for use in bars, with a Zirkel monogram of the student club and "Beer nails" to prevent its being damaged. The text can be seen here.
Some of Schauenburg's items aroused controversy: Der heilige Antonius von Padua (1870) by Wilhelm Busch was proscribed for denigrating religion.„Herabwürdigung der Religion und Erregung öffentlichen Ärgernisses durch unzüchtige Schriften“
