History
This firm was founded by Matthias Gray (1829–1887) in San Francisco in the mid 1800s. According to one source (Wikipedia), the business was founded in 1852. However, the music publishers page on this site had noted that its origins were from Atwill, who sold his business to Matthias Gray and William Herwig in 1860 (citation needed). M. Gray was one earliest music publishers based on the West coast of the United States. According to Sixty years of California song (1913), soon after Gray's death the "immense" stock of music was "sold for a song" to Ditson.
