It is the last piece which justifies the general title of this suite. The idea came after reading the moving account of the resettling of the remaining islanders from Hirta, in the Scottish Outer Hebrides. A number of other islands could have qualified, but owing to the composer's special relationship with Scotland, through his mother, this is the one that sang for him. The folkloric tune used in the last piece is purely generic, it sprang to the composer's mind spontaneously and is not linked to though it may resemble the few original local songs that have been passed down to us.
