History
Kunst- und Industrie-Comptoir was a short-lived but important Viennese publisher of the early 19th century.
It was founded in 1801 by painter Joseph Anton Kappeller (1761-1806) and lawyer Jakob Holer, under the name "Kunst- und Industrie-Comptoir Kappeller und Holer". It was a firm of music publishers, and dealers in maps and map prints. Kappeller left in 1802, and Joseph Schreyvogel (1768-1832), Joseph Sonnleithner (1766-1835) and his brother-in-law Johann Sigmund Rizy (1759-1830) joined the firm, which changed its name to "Kunst- und Industrie-Comptoir zu Wien". At some point, a branch was opened in Pest [Budapest].
The Kunst- und Industrie-Comptoir were Beethoven's principal publisher from 1802 to 1808, publishing some 40 first editions of his works. After declaring insolvency in 1813, the firm was taken over in 1814 by Joseph Riedl von Leuenstern, but little if any new music was published. The business was finally dissolved in 1833 after Schreyvogel's death.
N.B. The French form of the name is most often found on title-pages - Bureau d'Arts et d'Industrie.
This is also the name of a roughly contemporary publisher with offices in Leipzig and Berlin - it is unlikely that they are the same - Vienna is not mentioned on those title-pages, and the plate numbers appear to be different; for now, the Berlin and Leipzig publications have not been linked to this page.
