Messerschmidt's attribution to Allan has to be erroneous; Allan was only about 6 years old when this tune appeared in 1870 in Middleton's Selection of Strathspeys, Reels &c. for the Violin.
Published in ca.1898 in The Strathspey, Reel, and Hornpipe Tutor (Honeyman, William Crawford) (p.41), though that is definitely not the first publication. Tunearch.org gives reference to Middleton's Selection of Strathspeys, Reels &c. for the Violin (1870, p. 45). In both publications, fiddle is the instrument, but other collections may give the tune for any treble instrument. Since it is not known whether Middleton's was the first, this is tagged for any treble instrument, for now.
