I wonder about the late first publication date. A letter from Tchaikovsky written in the 1870s at least suggests that he knows the work not only from performance but from score, and (implies?) that his correspondent should be able to acquire a copy of the same also , suggesting that the score in question is not a limited circulation manuscript copy.- ES
