Navigation etc.

Sources seem to differ about the origins of this work. CSO and Boosey have it composed in early 1909 and premiered in April (NS May) 1909; a book on Pierre Monteux notes in passing that the composer conducted it (somewhere?) in 1908; another source has it composed already in 1907. Very confusing. Less so if there are two versions- perhaps there are? - ES (According to Barrie Martyn's book on Rachmaninoff, the manuscript is dated 17 April (OS) 1909, one day before the premiere. Further changes were made to the work "before it was ready for printing in June". "I have rewritten from scratch almost half", wrote Rachmaninoff. Still, 1909 does seem to be right...)

Threlfall catalogue gives date for the 13 leaves of sketches (also in the Glinka museum) as "Spring 1909". Gutheil issued full score and parts in October. Threlfall, Boosey and CSO are most likely correct. Monteux had nothing to do with the premiere so the 1908 date in the book is probably an error.
