Founded by Gusztáv Heckenast (1811–1876) this firm is perhaps most noteworthy for having published Robert Volkmann's works from Op.28 to 69 in Pest from 1857 to 1877. From 1877 until 1897, its successor company Heckenast Nachfolger published light music in Bratislava (Pressburg).
