The play Hassan was the last work of writer James Elroy Flecker (1884-1915). Its full title is Hassan: The Story of Hassan of Baghdad and How he Came to Make the Golden Journey to Samarkand. A production in London's West End was planned immediately after Flecker's death, but those plans foundered due to the war. The play was not published until 1922, and Delius wrote this incidental music for the play's first production, in 1923.
