History (from Raff.org catalogue, other sources. MIDI available from Raff.org of at least the final version, used to be available of the first version too.)
First version of 1844 (with final fugue) published by Breitkopf und Härtel in 1845 (publication first announced in Monatsbericht (1846), p.7). Revised in 1881 (publication first announced in Monatsbericht (1882), p.268), finale new. See the Raff.org page (linked above) about the new version of the sonata also. (As the author of the latter page says, it's essentially a new work, not a revision, despite having the same opus number. Still, the earlier work has been republished by Edition Nordstern in 1994 and again in 2004, and copies of the 1845 print exist as well; confusion may as well be avoided.)
Was recorded for the first time (in July 2002) by Valentina Seferinova and issued on CD by Cahoots Classical label as CAH 001 (subsequently taken over by Cameo-Classics; and now by Nimbus Records)
Tra Nguyen and Adrian Ruiz have also recorded the 1881 work, but as yet there appear to be no commercial recordings of the 1844 sonata. (It seems misleading to call them "versions" when they may not even share melodic material.)
