Founded in St. Petersburg in 1792 by Johann Daniel Gerstenberg (1758-1841). Engraver Friedrich August Dittmar joined in 1793. Gerstenberg left St. Petersburg in 1796, opening a branch in Gotha, which he continued to run from his home Hildesheim where he moved the same year. Dittmar continued publishing in St. Petersburg until 1809.
A Hildesheim-based music publisher called Gerstenberg was still active in the 1870s; presumably a descendant.
