History

Göpel was a literary publisher in Stuttgart which published song books from 1842 to 1862. They were first published in small booklets (Hefte) then collected in vast 600 page or more volumes (Bände). The main titles were Philomele, Deutsche Liederhalle, Orpheon, Göpels deutsches Lieder- und Kommerzbuch, and Das Buch der Lieder. Most of the collections were edited by Thomas Täglichsbeck (1799—1867). Their most successful publication was probably 7 Lieder aus dem Buche der Liebe, Op.39 (Abt, Franz) (1847) which included the song Agathe, a perennial 19th century favorite.
