The company was founded by Isaac Kaufmann Funk in 1875 as I.K. Funk & Company, but when Adam Willis Wagnalls joined in 1877 the name was changed to Funk & Wagnalls.
Funk & Wagnalls was famous for publishing reference works, especially The Standard Dictionary of the English Language from 1894 and Funk & Wagnalls Standard Encyclopedia from 1912.
Music publications, mainly hymnals such as The Standard Hymnal (Converse, Charles Crozat), were part of its early interest in religious books.
