Fughetta su un Kyrie di Palestrina is a 2-minute composition for piano on Palestrina's best known Kyrie: the one from Missa Papae Marcelli. The subject of the fughetta is actually drawn from the cantus theme of the Kyrie of this mass, and after the severe exposition in the beginning, it is treated with a certain freedom. The whole piece is a short but dense time travel of Palestrina's melody, with a crystal-clear beginning, some typical 18th-century passages, Romantic progressions, and a Blues ending. Palestrina wanders around back in the past, too, with a fun Landini cadenza embedded in the piece. This fughetta is not difficult but it should be performed with expression and a witty spirit.
