In a letter from February 1914 to his wife, Nielsen mentions having composed the hymn. From a surviving draft, it is clear that Nielsen's pupil, Paul Hellmuth, helped with the harmonization. Later the hymn was better known with Hans Adolph Brorson's original version of the text, 'Mit hjerte altid vanker'.
