The lyricist may refer to Edward Vincent Sharp (1845-1925). The Confederate flag that this song refers to is the "Stars and Bars", which was made the official flag in 1863 when Sgt. Sharp would have been 18 years old. If it was him, he was certainly a learned man, using both Pleiades and Secessia in his lyrics.
