The song, which became one of Nielsen's most popular, was apparently composed in 1906 in connection with a meeting in a restaurant with Holger Drachmann. The wish of the authors behind a Copenhagen summer music-hall show was to include a 'Danish Patriotic Song' as an introduction to the performance.
