This musical rendition of Aubigné's Sonnet Extase, with its biblical overtones in true Death where is thy sting manner, is taken from L'hécatombe à Diane (1573) the first part of his collection of Sonnets Printemps dedicated to Diane Salviati, a young Catholic, an impossible love on account of his being a converted Protestant. The music's alternating and repetitive falling rhythms and collapsing semitones are meant to mirror the poet's self-centered dereliction. A rough translation of the poem is submitted, as well as a keyboard reduction. An audio approximation is also furnished.
The transcription for Trumpet and Organ is relatively straightforward, retaining the trumpet part in its entirety but the keyboard part, naturally, does not adhere to the original as closely. As for the arrangement for Horn and Organ, it starts out closely enough, but later on is far less literal in notes, while preserving the spirit.
