The preface states violas da gamba may by used, if available, in Sonatas 1, 3, 6 11 in place of violas. Continuo = violone + organ. One-to-a-part performance probably intended.

The preface says that the sonatas were composed for performance in the Royal court chapel, but may also be performed as secular works.
