Extra Information | This collection was published by Benjamin Cooke in London fifteen years after the composer’s death. The designation on the title page is misleading, as the viola part is concertante, so the only ripieno parts are the two extra violins and basso. With the exception of the sixth concerto (and a few bars of harmonic filler in the third) these three extra parts do nothing more than selectively double the core four parts, suggesting that they are spurious. Some of these works exist as manuscripts in collections in Paris and Münster, designated as "Sonate à Quattro per due Violini, Violetta, e Violoncello senza Cembalo"; sadly no further information is available, and the editor (Dennis Cook) was unable to view these. |
