ABOUT THE PIECE
Chronostasis was premiered by the Land’s End Ensemble of Calgary, Alberta in November 2013. It was revised in 2015 when a 5 octave marimba part was added.
PROGRAM NOTE
Chronostasis (when time stands still) was inspired by the sparse and beautiful works of the late Morton Feldman. The perception of time can be illusory and, for me, particularly so when listening to Feldman's later piano works. His slow, sustained notes suspended in the air seem to me to warp time and create an experience where I find myself not exactly sure of the duration of the piece or how long I was listening to it. No doubt his music has influenced mine in many ways, but never so overtly as in this new piece as, when composing it, I was drawn to explore this suspension of time in homage to him. Chronostasis is dedicated to Morton Feldman.
INSTRUMENT SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS
Piano - Sustain pedal and Una Corda pedal down throughout the duration of the piece.
Vibes - Sustain pedal down throughout. Please voice the chords so that the highest notes are the same dynamic as the lowest notes.
Marimba – Very soft mallets, the beginning and ending of each marimba roll should be as silent as possible.
