German composer and violinist. Johann Pfeiffer was born in Nuremberg in 1697. He studied violin and law, and joined the Weimar court ensemble in 1720, becoming Kapellmeister there in 1726. After several other positions he went to Bayreuth as Kapellmeister in 1734, and became the composition teacher of the future Margravine Wilhelmine. He remained in Bayreuth as a highly regarded composer and musician until his death in 1761.
Pfeiffer wrote orchestral suites, chamber music and solo concertos, and also cantatas and other vocal music. Apart from this concerto, one other work for viola da gamba by him is known
