Miscellaneous information
Eugen Felix Richard Thiele (1847-1903) was a German composer. He was born at Berlin, Germany, in 1847, the son of Johann Friedrich Ludwig Thiele (1816-1848), an organist and bell ringer in Berlin who also composed concertos and trios. According to an 1873 newspaper announcement, “A new operetta, by a young composer of Berlin, Herr Richard Thiele, entitled ‘Die Dorfmusikanten,’ has been produced at Hamburg with success. “ Richard was the director of the Winter’s Tale performances at Kroll’s Theatre from 1880 to 1886. He was also an organist who wrote part songs, piano pieces, orchestral works, and band music such as The German Flag Song. His most popular work was “Unsere Marine,” a march for military band. Thiele died in 1903 at Berlin. The Discography of American Historical Recordings lists three recordings of Thiele’s music. They were a 1908 Gramophone recording of Kriegs-Erinnerungen (1870-1871) by the Grammophon Orchestra, a 1915 Victor recording of Unsere marine by the Victor Military Band, and a 1915 Columbia recording of Deutsches Flaggenlied by the Columbia Military Band with vocal chorus.
