He was not directly related to his famous contemporary Josef Suk (1874–1935), who was Dvořák's son-in-law.
After a few years as an orchestral violinist (1880-85) he worked as an opera conductor in the Russian Empire, finally working at the Bolshoi from 1906 to 1932.
