Spengel was a friend of Brahms and the conductor who in 1904 premiered Hugo Alfvén's Midsommarvaka opus 19 (one of that composer's more popular works.) *His compositions number 14 Opp, published between 1878 and 1911, including a symphony, a piano quintet and solo and choral songs.
