Younger brother to Florent Schmitt, he was born in Blamont (Meurthe-et-Moselle). At 18, he came to Paris where he succeeded to Joseph Bonnet as organist for the Dominican Fathers. Later he was organist the church of Charenton. He is also known as a music critic for La Patrie.
