The composer Johann Scherer is so unknown that even his first name is uncertain. His last name, when it does appear, is spelled in various ways. Nothing is known about his birth or his death. In all likelihood, Scherer was a member of the court orchestra in 1768 in Kassel, playing the flute and viola, although his instrument of choice is allegedly the oboe. But, since the flute music was in high demand at the time, the only compositions by Scherer that have survived are not for the oboe but rather for the flute.
