A music hall composer, singer, and pianist. Born in Exeter in 1874. He was famous for being part of The Vagabonds, a hugely successful music hall group. His character was the jester, playing the fool on stage. Before his Vagabond fame, he was primarily a society entertainer at the piano, composing all his own material. His piano entertaining became his stable in the Vagabonds however. He recorded many of his songs on Zonophone and Pathé in the 1910s, accompanying himself on the piano. His career was quite long, from the late Victorian era to his death. He died in Hampstead in 1932 after a long illness with cancer. He was survived by his wife Ethel M. Montague (1876-1953)
