After a period as an orchestral musician he composed operas and instrumental works (1820-40). Finally he was active 1846-80 as a composition teacher in Leipzig. He wrote Lehrbuch der musikalischen Komposition (Textbook on Music Composition, 4 vols., 1850–67).
