He studied bass in Prague 1861–1867 with Josef Hrabe (1816-1870), then after a period as an opera conductor in Kassel (1868-70) returned to teach bass in Prague (1870-2). He then spent another itinerant period as opera conductor in Sondershausen, Göttingen, Halberstadt, Eisleben and Berlin (1872 -78) before settling in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, where he was active as a player and conductor (Schwerin Singakademie) for about 40 years.
Unfortunately his fame was eclipsed by that of his fellow-student and Czech contemporary Franz Simandl (1840—1912) who achieved distinction as Professor of double-bass at the Vienna Conservatory from 1869 to 1910.The following 5 pages are in this category, out of 5 total.
