Lived in the United States 1871-8, 1881-1900, then returned to Berlin; had directed the Stern Conservatory there 1878-1881. Pupil of Friedrich Kiel among others. Herman was a member, with Max Bendix (violin) of cellist-composer Victor Herbert's Metropolitan Trio Club in New York, 1889.
