He was born in Rotterdam in the family of Louis Coenen (1797-1873). He died in Lugano. He is brother to Anton Coenen (dates given as 1845–1876 at NMI)? He is uncle of the Louis Coenen, mentioned elsewhere on this site. He is mentioned in the Dutch music guides by Henri Viotta (1881), Letzer (1911) and Kruseman (1949), which were used as sources for the article on the Dutch Wikipedia.
He was educated by his father and sister. His first performance as a pianist was in 1852 in Rotterdam. When he was 17 years he travelled to Suriname, Paramaribo where he stayed for 7 years. After this stay he went to North- and South America giving concerts in the most important cities. In 1862 he went to London where he stayed for 44 years. He was proffessor at the Guildhall School of Music in London and after his retirement he travelled to Lugano, Switzerland where he died.
