"Born in Tring [Hertfordshire, UK] in 1878, Herbert J. Brandon first lived in Akeman Street and attended a Non-conformist boys’ school in Park Road. As a young man he worked in the family furnishing business, filling his spare time by writing numerous song lyrics — often to music by Horace Keats — prose pieces and stories, many of which were published both in England and Australia (the great Australian baritone Peter Dawson recorded Brandon’s song, Drake’s Call). The lyrics for The Miller of Tring appeared in 1917, possibly in an effort to provide some cheer in the darkest days of WWI. Brandon lived in Tring all his life; he died in 1945." (extracted from
