Gow was a violinist and bandleader in Edinburgh, and wrote this piece originally as an instrumental tune, i.e. the original did not include a vocal part. It probably was for violin with some sort of ensemble backing. The words were added later by Carolina Oliphant Nairne (1766–1845). Various publications list the genre differently - it has been published as an air, in a collection of quadrilles, etc. Tagging subject to correction if an original is uploaded.
